A model on crutches: Discipline and determination

Doron Matalon

She has already won several beauty pageants. Her most important title was Miss Universe Israel 2014 and she was also very successful in the modelling business. To keep her body in shape, she regularly went to the gym. The Israeli was known for her discipline and ambition.

One September evening, after an intensive workout, the 22-year-old was making her way home. Suddenly, she tripped over an uneven patch of the pavement and fell. Pain shot through her leg and she knew immediately that something was wrong. People passing by rushed to help her and called an ambulance. At the hospital, she was immediately taken to the emergency room. The x-rays confirmed her fears: A serious injury of the ankle.

After being treated and having her leg plastered, she was discharged with a pair of underarm crutches. The first few days were particularly difficult. The leg throbbed. She took medication for pain and thrombosis. She had always been used to moving freely and independently and suddenly this was hardly possible. Walking on one leg and with crutches was particularly difficult. But over time, she got used to the restricted movement and the new body balance. She learnt how to use the crutches.

A few weeks later, Doron Matalon was seen in a better mood again. She wore a short, airy summer dress that accentuated her tanned skin. With a small backpack on her back, she could carry something, because she needed her hands to walk. Instead of armpit crutches, she now used forearm crutches, with which she moved fluidly and practiced. She wore a flip-flop on her healthy foot, which gave her little support, but she didn't seem to have any problems with it. With a smile on her lips, she showed the still very white plaster cast on her lower leg, from which her toes peeked out with a perfect pedicure. After some time, the cast was replaced by a splint, which was only on the ankle and fit in a shoe. Soon she was able to walk without crutches.

Despite the challenges that the accident had brought, she radiated a positive energy. She had learned to deal with her new situation and was determined not to let it get her down. Her courage and determination were admired by many who met her along the way.
