My lower left leg was in a plaster cast for three weeks after the operation, which severely restricted my freedom of movement. I could only walk with crutches. Every step was a challenge and I had to learn to rely on them. While most people were outside enjoying the first warm rays of sunshine and nature was awakening, I was mainly inside on the sofa or in bed putting my leg up.
But I opened the windows to let in the fresh air and sunlight. I watched nature as the flowers started to bloom and the birds sang. I used the time to be creative, to draw and write. I listened to music and read books that inspired me. I recognised and appreciated the small joys of spring from an inner perspective. Only slowly did I venture outside and experience spring more intensely.
Despite the challenges, it was a time of reflection and personal growth for me. I learnt to be patient with myself and to give my body the time it needed to heal. It wasn't always easy, but I am grateful for the experiences - with my plaster cast and my crutches.
