Between shadow and hope

A scene in the hospital corridor

A moving scene takes place in the dimly lit hospital corridor. A young woman, her facial features reflecting sadness and emotional tension, sits in a wheelchair. She is quietly accompanied by a nurse who gently pushes her through the shadows of the corridor.

A rigid, massive plaster cast surrounds the young woman's right leg. Her exposed left knee clings to the thick bandage. But the plaster cast bears witness to the harshness of the fate that has unexpectedly befallen her. On the one hand, it is a remedy for her broken bones, on the other, a visible symbol of her suddenly imposed weakness.

The neck brace she has to wear because of a spinal compression keeps her head stable and prevents it from drooping sadly. It forces her to look ahead, into an uncertain future. A grey fluffy blanket on her lap and chest provides warmth, replacing the missing clothes. Beneath it lies the fragility of a body striving for recovery.

In the background, people move like silhouettes against the pale light. Their faces are invisible, their stories unknown. But at this moment, they are part of the scene unfolding before their eyes. They are struck by the sight of the woman, by her suffering, by her disability caused by the medical aids and by the fate that must have befallen her. But the observers are also witnesses to the hope and the constant struggle for health that takes place time and again in the hospital.
