Short leg cast français  deutsch

Indications
Fractures, ligament injuries and strains in the area of ankle or foot. The cast extends from the basis of the toes to approx. 3cm under the knee. Duration: 5-8 weeks in the case of fractures.

Procedure
During the application the patient should lie face downwards and the lower leg is in a vertical position (see figures). The stockinette exceeds knee and toes. Cotton wool and paper bandages to compress the wool follow. Achilles tendon and places where bones are located immediately under the skin should be padded well.

If fibreglass is used only one longuette is put onto the first layer of bandages on the sole. Two layers follow.

Toe plate
In case of toe injuries or fractures of metatarsus a toe plate is integrated in the cast. But also walking casts and other leg cast when crutches are used should have a plate in order to protect the toes.

To form a toe plate the longuette on the sole exceeds the toes and the padding. In the end, stockinette and padding are fold over the plate and fixed with the last layer.

Especially with fibreglass bandages, you can create a compact, stable toe plate, if you put first padding and bandages over the toes and then cut the toes free. See the photos.
