A hospital in Samarkand (Uzbekistan). The young woman lies immobilized in a plaster cast in the women's ward. Her hip bone has been badly damaged by tuberculosis bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). Most of the bone has to be removed, rendering her unable to walk. Tuberculosis can attack any body tissue but usually the lung is affected. Some of these pathogens are resistant to several antibiotics. |
